Career decision making
What to consider and when to make that career change?

Have you ever been in the situation wherein you wake up in the morning knowing that it's workday and you feel sick but you are completely fine and healthy? Or let's just say that you don't feel like showing up to work and want to extend your off?

Are you just practically dragging yourself to work because of your responsibilities (bills, house rent, other utilities, and expenses)? You feel already drained even if you haven't started your shift yet. Maybe you need some change. Maybe it's about time to take that leap for a career change.

Should you have to really quit?

A lot of us, especially those who work in the office facing a strict boss every day may always think of leaving or quitting the job. But on the other hand, practically speaking, it's the hardest decision to make. You have to consider a lot of factors. But before you think of those factors, the first thing that comes into your mind is, to take a rest and assess yourself then ask " Am I ready to quit this job?"

What to consider before you switch your career?

As for me, since I've been dwelling with these thoughts in my head for quite some time now, I will let you know the things I personally consider for a career change.

  • Savings- Do I have enough savings to cover my expenses while I'm looking for a new job?

  • Leaving my peers and colleagues that I am already close with- It's like you are leaving a family member behind and it's sad to think that you may not see them really often once you resign.

  • Where to go/What happens next?- I will have to start from scratch. From updating my resume, getting new requirements, facing interviews, and getting into training before you secure that slot for a new job. And (let's just say) since you came from a not so nice work environment, you will have to ask yourself if it's worth it to leave your job since you are clueless about what lies ahead. So questions are, "Is the boss nice?", "Is the job more difficult than what I have now?" and the likes.

So before you print out and submit that resignation letter, you have to think more than 100 times and assess yourself about that career change that you are planning to do.

Work with what makes you happy or passionate about to succeed in your career

So one of the reasons why you are not happy with your job is simply because that is not what you are passionate about. you are in that position not because you want to, but because you need to. Just because of money and not because that is where your heart is. A job can be compared to a relationship. If you are not happy with your partner, or your heart does not seem to be with that person, the ending will be painful. You have to quit and let go to find someone better, and someone that will make you happy and excited to be with.

So before you quit, make sure you are well equipped. The world is too big to get stuck in your little place at work. Explore yourself, know what you can do, and your skills. Make time to assess yourself over and upskill to be better. Never settle for less. Work with passion and you will never be going to practically drag yourself to work ever again.
